Am I rich?

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

1 Timothy 6 :17-19

Random thoughts on my journey through life.

Random thoughts on my journey through life - By Kate Muchoki

I've embarked on a cover to cover study of the Bible...again (one day i will actually finish!!) and I'm in Leviticus. So I was reading this chapter on uncleanness... Leviticus 15. It talks about the uncleanliness of a woman who has a discharge of blood for many days other than her monthly period. NIV puts it as below:

25“‘When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period.

26 Any bed she lies on while her discharge continues will be unclean, as is her bed during her monthly period, and anything she sits on will be unclean, as during her period.

27 Anyone who touches them will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.

One of my absolute best verses in the Bible is the one for "she touched the hem of his garment and she was healed"! The woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5: 25-34 had had it for 12 years!! 12 years people! For 12 years she had bled and for 12 years no doctor had been able to help her.

For 12 years she was considered unclean.... think about it from Lev 15: 25-27... any bed she lay on was unclean. That means if she was married, her husband couldn't sleep on the same bed with her and we can safely assume he didn't... for 12 years! He probably went off and got himself another woman and closed that chapter... in those days you could do that! If she wasn't married, it's likely there were no suitors knocking down her door... why bother with a woman you can't touch or share a bed with!

Leviticus continues to say...anything she sits on will be unclean and anyone who touches them will be unclean. Think about this for a second. You could not invite her to your house!! If you did she'd have to stand and probably not touch anything...otherwise you risk becoming unclean yourself! Her friends probably tried in the early days... they'd probably stand around with her chatting in the first month... but as time went by and life went on, they moved on and started hanging out with people they could sit in their houses with and chat. People they could sit on the same couch with... people who could give them a hug when they needed one or a shoulder to cry on... literally! Point is - they moved on!

In my thinking, this woman was probably a poor lonely shunned outcast who had spent all her money trying to get well...for 12 years...with no success. After 12 years, surely she must have thought she had seen it all...mganga kutoka Tanzania, miracle medicines, prayer crusades...you name it...she had been there, done that, bought a t-shirt, made a movie...and yet with no healing.... for 12 years. No friends, No money, No love...for 12 years.

And yet Mark 5: 27 says "...when she heard about Jesus..." and we all know how this story ends. She touched the hem of his garment and was healed. But think about that verse for a minute… "when she heard about Jesus." After 12 years of trying different doctors with no success, when she heard about Jesus...she knew. She knew her healing had come. I always wonder who was it that told her about Jesus and what did they say? The Bible doesn't say ... when she saw the miracles that Jesus performed...no, when she heard about Jesus.

What can you tell someone who has had an issue of blood for 12 years, tried different doctors and only gotten worse. What can you tell them to get them to the point of thinking... “if I just touch the hem of his garment I will be healed”? This challenges me so. I cannot be reciting to them something I learnt in Sunday school. I cannot be regurgitating bible verses or sermons to them. I cannot be telling them about doctrines that I believe in. I cannot even be selling them a text book Jesus. What kind of Jesus do I need to be talking about for someone to hear me and know in their heart of hearts that all they need to do is to touch the hem of his garment?

How well do I need to know this Jesus myself and how well... and often... do I need to represent him? Am I preaching Jesus to the point where people hear me talk about Him and they know... they believe? Is my Jesus big enough, powerful enough, practical enough to solve everyday problems... big and small? Is the Jesus I am preaching the Jesus I should be preaching?

Is the Jesus you are preaching the Jesus you should be preaching?
