For the past two days, I have been studying the tongue. Not its physical shape or composition...but the power the tongue holds to those who listen to us.

There are many scriptural references to the tongue and it is these that I have been studying.

The book of James, chapter 3 describes the tongue as a fire, capable of setting ablaze the course of human existence. How true this is, just reflecting on the post election violence in my country in 2008 - which was fueled by tribal talk.

According to James, a person who is able to control his tongue, is also able to control his body and this is a sure sign of maturity.

Reviewing my tongue life, I sought to find out if my tongue had indeed ignited some fires, and the sad revelation was that, it had.

Seeking to protect the course of my human existence, I have made a decision - that largely depends on the power of the Holy Spirit working in me - to desist from speaking words that bring death/ fire to my listeners (family and friends).

This means ; I will not be a tale - bearer (gossiper/liar), slanderer, abuser, be one that puts people down, or who expresses her opinion unnecessarily, will not participate in idle talk, nor be one who is quick to talk.

Instead, with wisdom from above: I'll keep my motives pure in giving opinions, encourage, lift up, praise, compliment, and mostly, keep my mouth shut.

I am already a quiet, this may not be too hard to accomplish.

Below are a few verses in this regard;
What you say can preserve life or destroy it : so you must accept the consequences of your words

If you want to enjoy life and wish to see good times, you must keep from speaking evil and stop telling lies.

Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you

The more you talk, the more likely you are to sin. If you are wise, you will keep quiet.

Thoughtless words can wound as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal.

Those who are sure of themselves do not talk all the time. People who stay calm have real insight.

Lord, place a guard at my mouth, a sentry at the door of my lips.

Mike at 22

This post is a tribute to Mike who breathed his last yesterday. It would seem right to say, at 22 years, he's gone too soon...but some of his lasts words to my kid bro was " am amazed I made it this far". Mike battled leukemia, but it didn't stop him from pursuing that which he knew was important, a 2nd year Bachelor of Commerce student who fought all the way to the end.

We mourned you in silence yesterday - stilled by your absence.

Rest in Peace, Mike and God keep and watch over your mum and those who loved you like PK.

While you wait

This is for J, and all others who are waiting on the Lord - Its hard, but don't give up.

God has promised to reward all who wait on Him and are faithful in trial. Hang in there!

Love is a shelter

The Promise

"He is dead. Lets move on now" - that's what the Lord said to Joshua to initiate their relationship after Moses died. " Be strong and courageous - for I will never leave you nor forsake you"...God continued...." Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?"...God asked....

Death often brings fear - for it often means adjusting to life without the person whose golden chain has snapped. For the past week, I have been afraid, and so has been my family - a gang of robbers attacked our home and killed our faithful watchman, Mr. Kafuri in a most cruel way. Unknown to us their intention, we were left bitter & confused and the words that have brought us comfort are Isaiah 54 : 10 - 17. This morning though, I hear God say to me..." Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous"! shall I be.

RIP - Mr. Kafuri.

Joshua has a great task ahead of him, he is charged with the responsibility of leading the Israelite tribes into the land God promised them...saying " I will give you a fertile land flowing with milk and honey"....He sends spies to Jericho to survey...and the spies are spotted and reported to the king of Jericho. The king sends his men to find them...the spies are lodged in a prostitute's inn, her name Rahab.

This is the point a shrink would rightly say " Interesting!". God promises them land, He promises to defeat those living in the land...but the spies - are spotted and thinking 1. wouldn't have God concealed their "spying"?? ...2. these spies, being young Israelite men, choose to stay in a prostitute's inn...isn't that a vulnerable place to be in?

I am convinced that when God is ready to bring you into your promise, the devil is right there working to devour the get spotted, you get pursued...and you may most often find yourself in a vulnerable place....

The king's men come to Rahab and tell her to give up the spies....she is like.." Oh those guys? Yap, they were here alright...but they've gone now...left before the gates were shut....go that way! that's how they left...!". The spies hadn't gone nowhere, she'd hide them in her roof.
She went to them and said...." I know that God has given you this land...for we have heard how He has led you from Egypt and those many battles.....". Rahab heard and she believed to the point that she knew....but wait, she is described to us , as Rahab the prostitute....

God does not discriminate based on "titles"....among many things, I have come to learn that God is very liberal....He makes Himself known to anyone irrespective of the titles the world gives us.

Rahab then pleads with the spies..." When you come to take this land, spare me and my family as I have spared you." This woman has faith, these guys will return and will get their promise...she loves her family too, because she asks for the spies to spare not only her, but her father and mother, her siblings and their families.

Do you love your family to plead for them? I do.

The spies make it back to the other side of Jordan and tell Joshua.. " Ah! Jericho...we can take it! people there are damn scared and terrified of us!"

..and these include the men who were pursuing the spies. There is no need to fear the devourer of promise. For if you are in Jesus, then you know - you are a conqueror!

Joshua then gathers the men to prepare them to take siege of Jericho. The tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have already obtained their promise ( the Israelites had previously fought the inhabitants of the east part of the Jordan and this land has been allocated to Reubenites, Gadites and half tribe of Manasseh). Nevertheless, Joshua asks the able men from these tribes to arm up and help their brothers fight in Jericho for their promise and after their brothers have obtained their promise, they can return back to their land.

See, we have an obligation, we whom the Lord has already blessed to help our brothers and sisters also come into their blessings. There are those who have stood by us, in prayer, in encouragement, in actual giving, visiting, phoning etc...who need us to reciprocate and fight with them to posses their victory, please do so.

Joshua Chapter 1 & 2 was my reading this morning and these were my lessons.

And I know more from putting my thoughts down.

May these be craved in my/your heart.

Excuse my tenses - present and past tangle :-)

Usta! Ups and Downs

...was looking for a happy song...and bingo?! Usta!

....Ups & downs....

Keep the load light!

Perfected By Fire

So many times I’ve questioned certain circumstances
things I could not understand
many times in trials, weakness blurs my vision
then my frustration gets so out of hand
its then I am reminded I’ve never been forsaken
I’ve never had to stand the test alone
as I look at all the victories the spirit rises up in me
and its through the fire, my weakness is made strong

He never promised that the cross would not get heavy
and the hill would not be hard to climb
He never offered our victories without fighting
But he said help would always come in time
Just remember when you’re standing in the valley of decision
and the adversary says give in
Just hold on, our Lord will show up
and He will take you through the fire again

I know within myself that I would surely perish
but if I trust the hand of God, He'll shield the flames again
He never promised that the cross would not get heavy
and the hill would not be hard to climb
He never offered our victories without fighting
But he said help would always come in time
Just remember when you’re standing in the valley of decision
and the adversary says give in
Just hold on, our Lord will show up
and He will take you through the fire again
